Grid-connected Systems

Grid-connected system

In a grid-connected system, solar photovoltaic electricity is fed into the Grid. As the electricity generated by a PV module is in the form of direct current (DC) the electricity needs to be converted to alternating current (AC) through the use of an inverter.

In a grid-connected power system the grid acts like a battery with an unlimited storage capacity. Therefore the total efficiency of a grid-connected PV system will be better than the efficiency of a stand-alone system since there is no limit to the storage capacity. The electricity produced by the PV system is directly fed into the national grid. A production utility meter is used to measure the electric power produced in kilowatt (KWh) so as to calculate the amount payable to the customer by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).
